OAUSA Net - June 15, 2023 - Outdoor Photography Critique
Outdoor Photography Critique
Summer is upon us, and with the exception of high altitude High Sierra campsites, most areas are now open. June is National Camping Month and we plan to make the most of it while the season lasts. When a picture is worth a thousand words, we now seek to showcase our favorite locations with our best shots, photographically speaking. The better the shot, the better we can convey just how appealing it is to explore these locations. If you have favorites, now is a great opportunity to see how effective it is in highlighting them.
When I see photos showcasing a particular location or features, for me, it just serves to make that location a must see on my "future trips" list. A good camera is an undeniable asset, but knowing how to frame the shot, the best lighting conditions, the best time of day, etc., are all things that go into making a great picture.
As much as I try, I still aspire to photograph at, or close to, the level of the good 'ol days of magazines like Arizona Highways. In reading many of the various trip reports of our members, it is clear that there are a lot of good photographers out there. So, we thought it would be a good opportunity to get some professional input on our pics, and that will be the purpose of this net. We need everyone who would appreciate a constructive critique of their photos to submit 10 or more of your best shots. That's all!!!

A VERY RARE OCCURANCE
In a general sense, deserts are rarely the location where water naturally occurs in large quantities (except places like the Colorado River.) In our Mojave desert, above ground streams are seldom seen. For those who live in the Victorville area, the Mojave River is usually just a dry wash. If it occurs above the ground, it is almost always light in volume, at least in one area that I visit regularly. But when there is sufficient rainfall, the Mojave really comes alive. In one area. near Route 66 (National Trails Highway), there is a side road that actually crosses the river. Eighteen years ago, we had some heavy rainfall numbers, and this is what happened to that side road (not Route 66.)
This year, as most know, we also had some heavy rainfall numbers, and this is what the Mojave looked like 3 days ago, on this same road:
The same road, but with a different result. More on the net.

Here are my pictures from Hawaii and the Sierra's
Phil W6PET
I'd like to get your take on the two pictures below.
This is not my picture of the dam with water spilling over it, but since it's a rare occurrence when the water over flows the dam that I thought I'd put it in. For reference, earlier part of the this year, this area of the Sierra's received 25 inches of rain and 4 feet of snow. This is unprecedented for this area.

Dogs love being outside as much as we do, and--unlike us--even enjoy the trip there.
Makes me want to bite right in.
Much distracting clutter in this picture taken while camping with granddaughter, too much to "Photoshop" out. But still conveys a moment I found precious.
"Who the f does this belong to? Where's my shotgun?"
Sitting on Top of the World at Pegleg Smith's rock pile.
