[/img][/img] I sold my 2006 LJ. Wife got me a 2005 once things got settled. Previous owner used to be a member here. Hoping to get some history. Plus looking to get my radio license. Jeep went from San Diego to Sacramento! I travel between NorCal and SoCal frequently. Looking to make some overlanding friends

As far as Radios; used to run a Cobra and Uniden. Got informed on the new tech. Don’t know much, if any. Purchased some Baofeng. Not yet set up. Thus why am here.

I've moved away from CB radio but really enjoyed it when I had a couple of buddies who had a 'triangle" thing going on. We could talk and share time on the radio and could easily chose who could participate because of our proximity to one another. We let those who could behave into the discussion and easily kept others out.

Fast forward, I was learning about "skip" and "DX" for my job I the military so I had an ulterior motive to get better at SSB and had fun with 11m skip.

Understanding how important communication is, especially for small unit tactics, I moved over to amateur radio and have enjoyed the hobby ever since. It is a hobby but it serves a huge purpose in my "preparedness" thoughts and in the "real world" of getting stuff done should emergencies arise and being out on the "trail" you never know what that might look like.

So, I encourage you to look at studying and testing for your ham ticket but, if by chance, that is not in the cards for you, you can also dabble in the GMRS world and use that as a potential springboard into ham radio at a later date. I have taken a step back and also got my GMRS license that allows me to help others dial it back a notch while still providing for a communication platform that is very versatile as well and it addresses an issue with a family member who will not study for their ham license.

How I came upon this forum: on a cold morning I saw the outline of previously removed decals: Borrego Fest 2014 and Outdoor Adventure USA. This caught my interest both to learn about the history of the Jeep and also to reconnect with the HAM and Off Road Community which I used to belong to back in Southern California years back. Definitely different terrain up here in the Greater Sacramento Gold Country Area but looking to get my license once we get settled in. Thank you all in advance for tips and advice.

My curiosity was piqued by the unknown identity of the former owner of your Jeep. If you are comfortable letting us know, please do.

We are not a vehicle specific group, but we are a vehicle dependent group. Our travels take us to some very remote areas where we are dependent on the 4WD to get us safely there and back, and to carry all the gear we will need. Ham radio is an essential part of just about everything we do, and we encourage all who join us on the trail to get licensed up and enjoy the benefits. Additionally, we do a weekly amateur radio net (an on the air discussion) on a wide variety of outdoor topics, and, without an FCC license, you can listen (but not participate.) A ham radio license is simple to obtain, and will get you on the air so you can join the discussion.
