OAUSA Net - 2/29/24 - Driving In The Snow
Driving In The Snow
With all the snow that the weather has dumped on us lately, it was a perfect time to revisit one of our favorite topics - driving in the snow. Our guest snow expert driver this week will be Chet, AE6CO.
We will cover many of the things that you should do to safely drive in the snow, as well as things to avoid. So, get out your chains and join us.
Chet will cover snow driving, but here is a short list of things to avoid:

Re: OAUSA Net - 2/29/24 - Driving In The Snow
What is the CA DOJ Roster?
- California’s Unsafe Handgun Act (the “UHA”) seeks to prevent accidental discharges by requiring handguns to have particular safety features.
- As of January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.
- For more information visit: https://www.oag.ca.gov/firearms/certifi ... uns/search
- We have firearms that are, in some cases, several generations removed from the most modern designs when compared to other states.
- This continues to limit those wishing to seek out the "best" in the industry while CA continues to fight a recent judge's decision that the CA UHA is "unconstitutional."
- Advances in manufacturing firearms as "ambidextrous" have definitely worked against all of our lefthanded shooters.
- Some recent additions have really increased the "concealed carry" potential and the below, in no particular order, are a small sample of what is available.
These above are the top contenders in the "pocket pistol" group but we couldn't leave out the below "honorable mentions" or "classics."

H-U-A or "Hooah!" = Heard Understood & Acknowledged. In context: "Roger that sir, HUA!"

Chet's Topic Discussions
1 Snow driving must-haves.
2 Pack your vehicle accordingly.
The basics include:
3. Driving in the snow can be a lot of fun, except when you are not prepared or well equipped. Our discussion this week will include recommendations for driving in the snow , rules and laws as well as equipment suggestions. In addition to all of these things there is something that is more important than anything else - common sense. Mistakes in the snow can be dangerous
While part of the net will involve a discussion of laws in California, a review of laws in other states can be found here: http://www.4x4abc.com/ML320/ml_chainsss.html .

California law
1 Snow driving must-haves.
2 Pack your vehicle accordingly.
The basics include:
- a snow shovel,
- air jack and tire chains, if you have them.
- Brightly colored equipment is really useful in a snowy environment.
- An ice scraper/window brush and
- recovery equipment are a must, also.
- Pack ham radio gear if you have it. If not, consider getting licensed. The exam isn’t that difficult and gear is reasonably priced.
- If you don’t care to go that route, look into a satellite phone.
- Cell phones rarely work in the outback, so don’t count on one.

California Chain Requirement Levels
What are Snow TiresDuring the winter months, motorists may encounter traction chain controls in the mountain areas within California. When chain controls are established, signs will be posted along the road indicating the type of requirement. There are three requirements in California.
Requirement One (R1): Chains, traction devices or snow tires are required on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles.
Requirement Two (R2): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
(NOTE: Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.)
Requirement Three (R3): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.
California law
Snow-tread Tires:
The California vehicle code section 558 defines a snow-tread tire as follows, " A 'Snow-tread tire' is a tire which has a relatively deep and aggressive tread pattern compared with conventional passenger tread pattern". Snow-tread tires can be identified by examining the sidewall of the tire where the letters MS, M/S, M+S or the words MUD AND SNOW have been stamped into the sidewall.
