OAUSA Net - March 14, 2024 - Fly Fishing

Post by DaveK » Mon Mar 11, 2024 12:09 pm

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is a form of catching fish that can be particularly rewarding, as the payoff can be a creel full of your favorite fish, caught as a result of the right equipment and your ability to read the fish and their preferred diet. With the right equipment, skills and flies, the only thing that needs to be a part of your fishing gear, is a good skillet. Our guest fly fishing expert will be Richard KC6NJJ.

Tom Rosenbauer's Book, "The Orvis Guide to Reading Trout Streams" (1998) has a lot of great information on where fish, particularly trout, like to hang out and feed in rivers. If you know where the fish hang out, you can focus on those areas and increase your catch.

While the book has a lot of great information, I'll warn you that Tom's a better fisherman than he is an author, but he gets the point across and one needs to admire anyone that can sit down and crank out their ideas onto paper. The book has black and white photos and sketches, so in the 2020's, that seems to be a little low tech. I find that Tom's sketches convey information much better than the black and white photos.

In summary, the book is still worth buying in 2024.

Brian Flechsig at Mad River Outfitters has some great videos, including a series on how to get started in fly fishing. There are lots of fly fishing videos out there, but those by MRO are some of the best in my opinion.

KK6CTT for the online check-in, 03/14/24. Thank you.

My first experience with fly fishing was at 18 where a girlfriend's father took us out to the Snake River in Idaho. I remember having the Grand Tetons in the background. We had the whole kit from waders to nets, rods and flies. It was a blast and something that has stayed with me as one of the most fun fishing events of my semi-adult life (only 18 way to get started/ruined early).

Some of the best fishing since then, has been the opportunity to catch crappie, one after another in the summer months, even at local lakes like Fairmont Park, Hemet Lake and of course Perris Lake. There is a lot of action and one hit after another is a hoot!

I always start off dry-line fishing and eventually it turns into a combination of dry-sinking line.
