Ever find anything weird/interesting while on the trail?

Post by BorregoWrangler » Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:57 am

I always like it when we see wildlife while out on the trail. Its usualy deer, bighorn sheep, or rattle snakes. I was stalked by a mountain lion once while out hunting in jacumba.

But here's the most disturbing thing I've ever come across:

We found this up at our in-laws ranch in Dulzera. According to the authorities, whoever it was had died there only a few months before it was found, shortly after the wildfires. Evidently, it was from an illegal immigrant who had died of exposure. Crazy stuff!

Who else around here has found anything gnarly?

Well, while not anywhere as unusual as your "find", we did come across a rare Desert tortoise on our trip down the Mojave Road last year...while I'd read about them and their protected status for a long time, i'd never seen one in the wild until this trip. There it was, casually strolling across the road while a group of crazed off-roaders almost turned it into soup... We stopped to observe it for a little while, as it made it's way along the desert floor, seemingly unconcerned about it's group of admirers or the fate it had narrowly escaped...

Too cool, Larry. I've only ever seen one as well. It was up in Sheep Canyon.

BW, I wouldn't blame ya if ya felt a bit creeped out finding that skull. :o

Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me, but I found a large granite rock with a somewhat Easter Island looking face carved into it on Grapevine Canyon Rd when going home from Summer Fest on Big Bear.

I drove up on a bunch of stakes in the ground with bloody doll heads on them behind Cal State San Bernardino. I wasnt 4 wheeling, i was in my old Hyundai, but it was on the rough dirt roads.

I have come across lots of wildlife, including bear, couger, bighorn, elk, deer, moose, hogs, game birds, reptiles, etc. This to me is some of the most enjoyable aspects of wheeling and exploring. I have done alot of solo wheeling as I enjoy the solitude, or with just the wife.

Unfortunately, I have also seen campsites with trash everywhere. I once came across a nazi/whitepower campsite that turned my stomach. Hate symbols and hate sayings spray painted on the rocks. Trash and racial hate literature everywhere. Another time, I was looking for the road into the forest and ended up at the entrance to what appeared to be a tweeker compound. That turned into a bad experience as did the time I was shot at in the desert. I also had two characters try to rob me out in the middle of the desert.

Having met so many great people on this board, I have really begun to enjoy the group wheeling mentality.

After 3 years of trips in the Mojave I finally saw one this last March. It was almost all the way across a road. At first I thought it was a rock. I radioed my friend in the other 4x4 to avoid driving over it. This was on our way back from Rocky Ridge, just south of Seventeenmile Point.
