The list of manufacturers offering solid state hard drives (SSD) in their ruggedized lap tops is growing. The size of the SSD's is growing as well. The most recent player I have found is Rugged Notebooks. Relatively small (13.3 screen), relatively light (7.7 lbs.), very bright screen (1200 nit), night vision option and all of the bells and whistles a fully ruggedized notebook computer should have, make this very attractive.

Just picked up a used Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 w/ 13.3" touchscreen.

I Jjst started loading up stuff on it, but so far I love the screen, the size, and the indestructibility of this little guy. Hoping to have it set up in the FJ by BorregoFest...

I can't wait to see this! I started talking about mounting a computer in my FJ tonight and my wife gave me "the look"... I had to explain I wasn't going to do it right away, then I got another "the look" for even thinking about doing more and so just shut my yapper.

I'm going to let them fight it out...

Actually, I liked the idea of having all my user manual / service manuals on board with having to carry them all and worry about destroying them on the trail. And i'll be able to kep much more details mapping info, w or w/o GPS, to help navigate or explorer areas I'm not familiar with. And I can play solitare

Ollie (K6JYB) wrote:Frogeye has a laptop which he mounts in his rig. It's a Dell 610 I believe. Runs Delorme in it which runs the TOPO sofware you are talking about Dave. His has seen some serious abuse and has had no ill effects. Sucks for any passengers though. Takes up most of the passenger seat. Your tank might have more room.
I've since removed my laptop mounts and now place my laptop on top of my driver and passenger armrests. My Dell 600 fits perfectly there and now I can have my NAV and eat my passenger too
