2008-10-05: BrregoFest PreRun/Mega-Run

Post by OLLIE » Sun Oct 05, 2008 10:31 pm

BorregoWrangler (John) and I went out today to do some prerunning for BorregoFest. What a day... ;) It couldn't have been better. John rode shotgun with me in case the weater got oo warm. It allowed us to cover some SERIOUS ground. Here's a map of the tracking from my SPOT Messenger during the day.

We covered the following trails that I can remember the names of:
1. Carrizo Creek/Wash
2. Arroyo Seco Del Diablo
3. Fish Creek
4. Split Mountain
5. A new trail off of Split Mountain
6. Painted Gorge
7. Intro to Devil's Canyon (Route 150)
8. Route 149
9. Oriflame
10. Masson Valley Truck Trail
...There are some I can not remember but I will show plotted on a topo and with pics, vids, etc. in the next day or so. We found some awesome new trails and obstacles out there. All-in-all from my garage and back again my days travels took me 376 miles... At least 130 of which was in the dirt. I will have the exact numbers when I get a chance to analyze our route.

More to come... :D

Here's the topo of the routes. You can see three different tracks in yellow. Total dirt distance was 132 miles.

It was an awesome day! :D We hit up Vallecito Wash, Carrizo Creek, Arroyo Seco Del Diablo Canyon, Diablo Dropoff, Fish Creek/Split Mtn, followed the rail road tracks down between Supertition and Split Mountain, headed into Painted George and up Carrizo Mountain, then along old hwy 80 into Devil's Canyon and across to Dos Cabezas and out throught Jojoba Wash. Up S2 into Oriflamme Canyon to Banner and back home. What a day!

Here's some video and pics I have so far.

We spent some time trying to find this one-

Here we are airing down at the trail head to Vallecito Wash.

Into Carrizo Creek. I've never seen it so dry. Hopfully by BorregoFest it'll have more water.
Image

Caught a branch. It can be very tight and brushy.

We found this old tracter by the stage station site.

A tight, rocky squeeze in Arroyo Seco Del Diablo Canyon. Collapsed walls of the canyon are common.

Starting down Diablo Dropoff.

Split Mountain.

Halfway up that crazy trail coming out Fish Creek. (Did you clean your seats yet, Ollie?!)

Painted George.

High atop Carrizo Mountain. The pictures just don't do it justice.

Heading out from Devil's Canyon to Dos Cabezas.

The spring. Don't molest the wildlife!

You can thank me later for moving all of those rocks right there. Before you could have driven a lowered honda civic up and down that...

Here is me in the same spot.

Fun little spot for sure :D
I can't wait for the videos to get posted. I think we ended doing a few things a solo rig should not have done but we kind of had no choice once commited.

I just added the GPX file for the trip (dirt only) into the first post.

NOTE: There are parts of this run I would not recommend going solo on. ;)

You said it! When we came up on I was really missing my jeep! :( :D 8-)

I'll have more video up soon. There's a crazy little trail just out from split mountain.
