Imagine if you could track every vehicle on the screen of your laptop during an off road trip or event. This is the potential of APRS.
APRS: Automatic Position Reporting System, APRS is a system developed by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, which uses amateur radio to transmit position reports, weather reports, and messages between users.
A general out line for discussion tonight:
-What is APRS?
-What benefit would APRS have when traveling with groups of vehicles.
-Types of equipment. Simple inexpensive to more elaborate systems with vehicle laptops.
-APRS over HF

I'm looking forward to hearing as much as I can before I lose contact (I head north to go home and lose the repeater quickly).unwiredadventures wrote:Imagine if you could track every vehicle on the screen of your laptop during an off road trip or event. This is the potential of APRS.

Not to step on the net, but do you know if the Yaesu FTM-10M or FT857D (in vhf/uhf mode) have capacity to be used in an APRS system ?

I'm not familiar with that radio. We'll talk about adding it to existing radios as well.
These have the capability built in:
Kenwood D700 and D710A mobile.
Kenwood D7A and Yaesu VX-8 HT's.

Sorry I missed this. I'm running a Yaesu FT-8800 in the truck and have a Garmin Streetpilot 2730. Haven't even begun to explore APRS yet. Handheld, I'll probably end up with the VX-6 or 7

Larry - can you hit a repeater closer to home that has Echolink? That would be one way to stay in touch with the net.cruiserlarry wrote:I'm looking forward to hearing as much as I can before I lose contact (I head north to go home and lose the repeater quickly).unwiredadventures wrote:Imagine if you could track every vehicle on the screen of your laptop during an off road trip or event.
