Mojave Road Adventure: Jan 9-11th 2009

Oh, I was just surfing the web and found a trail report for the Mojave from last week. This was the only pic from it.

Im thinking about driving the Expedition on the Mojave trip because i can setup a full size air matress in the rear and not worry about having to setup a tent and rolling out a sleeping bag and mat. I hate rolling up sleeping bags and stuffing tents back in the bag. For those of you who have driven Mojave Road, do you think a pretty much stock truck with torsion bar lift and 33's will be ok?

An Expedition with 33's will be fine. There are only a couple of places where off camber and wash outs could be just a SLIGHT SLIGHT concern, but usually you can get around them.

You will get desert pinstripes though. Joshua Trees reach out and touch you every so often.

Ok, here's a link to some pictures taken on a trip we did in the Mojave Preserve in 2006. I couldn't actually drive you to any of these places, as I was one of about 8 trucks, and I wasn't leading the trip. However, if you go to this page, there are a number of thumbnails photos. Click on any, and that will bring up another page that has a larger pix, and on that page, in the lower right, there is a link that says where that pix was taken. right there, there is the word "map", click on that, and another pop-up will show exactly where it is. It's zoomed in really tight, you may not even see a road until you zoom out a bit, but once you do that, you can find out where the pix was taken.

I have no idea if you can extract GPS coordinates from this info, or how it works, but there it is.

I can tell you this. The Aiken cinder mine is awesome. You can spend at least an hour there exploring and playing. You can see several shots of us there, including some of us backed up the cinder hill a little bit.

Another pix, where we are all standing under a group of umbrellas avoiding the hail, was taken at (I believe) Carruthers Canyon. It doesn't show in the pix, but that was one cool spot to camp. It was like a fairly good sized flat field, pretty much surrounded by boulder walls, sort of. Plenty large for 30 vehicles! Right in the immediate area there were another couple of really awesome spots, for maybe 3 or 4 vehicles.

I have no idea what the leader of this trip plans, but I will tell you there are tons of very interesting places to visit that are not far off the Mojave Road, elsewhere in the Mojave Preserve.

This should be a fun trip!

Wow, very cool pics, indeed! I am so looking forward to this trip! My Jeep gave me a bit of a scare the other day when it wouldn't start, but it turned out to be just the starter. Replaced it in no time. Yeah, Caruthers Canyon. That's where the first night's camp is planned for. On the friggin' permit they want you to list where you plan to camp ahead of time. However, if any area is already taken its no big deal. I've never explored this area before and I don't have GPS yet so I'll be relying on those who've been there. Yay, can't wait!
