Now onboard

Post by nickduran » Mon Jan 05, 2009 12:11 pm

Hello I am now onboard with the group. Just finished being introduced to a group from the forum and taking my first trip. I am planning on being more active around here. This is good stuff.

My Rig:
2005 Nissan Frontier (w/ Tonneau)
(unfortunately not a 4x4)

My Gear:
- Backpacking
- Camping
- Hiking
- Etc.

My Goals for the new year
- Ham License
(anyone have pointers or want to assist)

Thanks
Nick

Welcome Nick. We have a link on the home page that directs you to some very helpful Ham licensing information.

Hey, Nick;

Great to have you on board. Welcome!

If you are interested in your Ham ticket, check out our Amateur Radio sections here in the forum. To get started, go to either your nearest bookstore or a Ham radio store and pick up a copy of Gordon West's Technician book. It's an an easy read and when combined with several practice tests, you will be ready to take the exam.

Post up if you have any questions.

Welcome aboard OAUSA, Nick! For really good practise test software, go to http://www.shenware.com
It's what I used to study and practise for my Technician's Exam and I got 100% on the test... and it's free!

Welcome Nick,

It's good to see another hiker join the group. Having spent so much on our rigs, sometimes we forget we can use our feet. Speaking of rigs, how are you doing on recovery equipment?

As far as your ham license, you can also take practice tests at QRZ.com. There's no replacement for the book previously suggested. If you're so motivated, you can study for an hour every other day and after a month you'd be ready to pass the test.

Looking forward to seeing you on the trail.

Welcome to OAUSA, Nick.

I look forward to hearing more about your hiking adventures, and to seeing you out on the trail.

As for earning your amateur radio license, if you are willing to commit a little spare time to reading up and taking some practice tests, you'll have your ham ticket in no time. And whether you're wheeling or hiking, a ham radio is a great communications medium for any outdoor adventure...
