TRIP PREPARATIONS
As trip prep is vital to a successful trip, I will discuss some of the most important areas, including:
1. Resources on places to visit
2. Vehicle prep
3. Comms prep
4. Emg prep
5. Food prep and protection
6. Navigation
7. Weather prep
8. Coordination of meals
9. Check weather reports
10, Select a good guide
Knowing where to visit is where your trip preps should start. For me, I have relied heavily on one Magazine - Arizona Highways. Three of my favorite places to visit have come from articles in the magazine - Red Rock Valley, Canyon de Chelly, and Monument Valley. Honesty compels me to admit that John Ford may have played a certain role in piquing my interest in Monument Valley, but Arizona Highways absolutely brought it into clear focus.
My collection of AH magazines dates back several decades, and this mini library has served me well in discovering new places to visit. For those who do not have any AH magazines for research, fear not, because recently, AH has placed all issues of the magazine on the internet, available here: https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/nodes/view/240. This is a wonderful resource for the adventurous traveler, but be sure to devote some time to get what you want - navigating the site will take some effort, but worth it.
This issue of AH from November 2005 is a perfect example. Here they highlighted Canyon de Chelly, Keet Seel, and Betatakin. This particular issue resides in my permanent "places to visit" folder. There are many other issues in this folder, an indication of the wealth of information in Arizona Highways.
