There's Kennedy Meadows or Fish Creek, just at the southern-most tip of Sequoia, only a couple hours outside of Los Angeles (up the 395 to J41). Big trees, very mountainous, and the Sherman Jeep Trail has plenty of rocks and tight spots between trees.

The negatives are 1) far for San Diegans, 2) I only know of 2 other challenging trails, 3) the drive to trails from camp could be 30 to 45 minutes.

Okay. I don't mind a bit longer drive.

Thanks for mentioning that option. I'm newer here to the S.D. area and so I don't know a lot of options...or I'd mention some.

Monache Meadows which is located on the North end of the Kern River Plateau (Kennedy Meadows area) is a great place to visit in the late Spring and early Summer for the profusion of wild flowers. There is a primitive campground at the end of the road next to the Kern River.

The Sherman Jeep Trail which starts near there is typically opened in mid to late May by the Ridgecrest Gear Grinders 4x4 club from the East and the Bakersfield Trailblazers 4x4 club from the West. They work through the day clearing the usual fallen trees and filling washed out ruts until they meet on the trail. They might enjoy some help from the OAUSA folks when it's time to open the trail later this year.

Me too, I'd definitely put some sweat equity into that beautiful place.

Ollie, does it sound like the board is leaning toward Calico, or do you need to post up a survey. I had such a blast in Mojave, I'm already looking forward to Springfest and how I can do more to contribute to these OAUSA events.
