Feb 12th Net - Destinations North along 14 and 395

Post by NotAMog » Mon Feb 09, 2009 3:12 pm

All,

We'll be having another destinations net this week. The theme will be off roading areas heading North on Highways 14 and 395. We'll be starting with the Jawbone Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, and the Dove Springs OHV area. From there, we'll work North into the Southern Sierra, Kern River Plateau, Inyo Mountains, and White Mountains as time allows.

I'd like to make this an interactive net so if you know of great off roading or camping areas that fit the theme of the net please feel free to contribute. Also, if anyone has any specific questions regarding these areas which they would like addressed on the net please post them to this thread.

One area I've spent a lot of time in is Last Chance Canyon, North of Mojave (city, not Preserve). The turn off from the 14 is Last Chance Canyon Road (GPS: N35 30.083 W117 56.942). Big attractions are Last Chance Canyon for rock crawling, Burro Schmidt's Tunnel (GPS: N35 24.643 W117 52.555), mines and remnants of rock houses.

Another is Kennedy Meadows off the 395 at J41 (also called 9 Mile Canyon Road) (GPS: N35 50.551 W117 52.504). The drive from the turn off at J41 to Kennedy Meadows camp ground is 26 miles (half up a steep windy grade, the other half - where it turns in to Kennedy Meadows Road - is a long flat valley) (GPS for the campground: N36 03.132 W118 07.795). There are several other camp grounds, Sherman Jeep Trail for rock crawling, and lots of trees.

I may not make the net if I have to work late. I hope this is a useful contribution in any case.

Jon,

I hope you are able to participate in the net. I've only been in the off roading hobby for a little over 2 years so I'm still exploring this area even through it's close to home. It sounds like you could have a lot of useful input of observations on these areas.
