2009 Calico Mogfest

Post by NotAMog » Tue Oct 20, 2009 7:54 pm

All,

Here are links to some pictures (not mine) from the Calico Mogfest which was held last weekend -

Take a look at these picture if you want to see something different in off roading. It is amazing how the Unimogs make everything look easy. The Pinzgauers aren't far behind. I'm still surprised to see what the Syncros can do with some skillful driving.

The weather was great and there was about as many vehicles as last year. In the campground we took up all of area A and B with a few stragglers in area C. New this year was a contingent of about 7 VW Syncros. There have been one or two before but never this many. Also the MAN 8x8 motor home was back again this year. I didn't get a chance to see it on the trail but I did see it pass by on the freeway as I was preparing to leave Yermo.

The ex-Red Bull Pinzgauer 6x6 took quite a beating running Duran Canyon. The mechanical damage looks much worse than it actually is but it will take quite a bit of labor to repair. It always helps to have a few Unimogs around for a tough off road recovery. I'm not sure how you would recover the MAN 8x8 motorhome unless another MAN or Tatra 8x8 happened by :D

My Pinzgauer was still down for maintenance so I wasn't able to bring it. This was my rig for the weekend -

The trailer is a 1947 KIT Sportsman teardrop. The combo isn't much for off roading but it is faster and more comfortable than the Pinzgauer and it doesn't require hearing protection when you drive it long distances

I was compensated for missing out on the trail runs by being able to attend a special railroad event being held at the old Harvey House in Barstow. There were model train displays, tours of the rail equipment collection, and vendors with crafts and train related stuff. The best part was being able to tour a train made up of mostly private rail cars that came in from Los Angeles for the event. If you think your off road rig is a money pit try owning a private rail car :o

I didn't get any pictures but here is a link for the rail car site -

I can't make any guarantee on the accuracy of the captions since I have no control over the sources I'm plagiarizing
