2009-11-27: Black Friday Jacumba Run

Post by BorregoWrangler » Fri Nov 27, 2009 11:09 pm

Black Friday Jacumba Run

Well, sdnative (Eric) was kind enough to let me ride shotgun with him this trip, even though last time I steered him into a canyon wall and a flashflood! So we met up with BlueFJ (Craig) and THATSALEXUS? (Steve) and rolled on out to the high-desert town of Jacumba, just south of Interstate 8. Our first stop was high atop Elliot Mine overlooking the Valley of the Moon. After coming down the other side of the Jacumba Mountains we crossed under the freeway and headed north around Table Mountain to the old Mountain Springs Stagecoach Trail and then to the overlook of Carrizo Gorge. By the time we got back down towards Jacumba at the gas stations, sunset was upon us. We enjoyed beautiful weather and great wheelin' with no breakdowns or carnage. I got lots of pics!

Great pics John. Wish I could have gotten another pass to join you guys. :( Did you do the back trail down Elliots Mine that spit you out near that shooting range?

It would have been good to have you along, Ollie. Yeah that's right, we did head out the other side. People were in fact shooting down there too as we were coming down, so made sure our headlights were on and gave a horn a few honks. It must of worked because no one ended up with bullet holes in their rigs.

I'd like to try going up that side some time. :)

I had a great time out there. Some of those shelf trails where a bit unnerving...I was sucking myself to the seat on some of those tight/narrow spots, if you get my drift. Thanks for leading this run, Eric! And John and Steve, it was good to see ya guys again.

Looks like an awesome trip. I just bought that book you guys found. It’s got a lot of cool info in it. Are any of you just into rock climbing? I am sorely out of practice but I got some sport climbing gear. I wouldn't mind sending some easy routs out there.

Great run Eric!

Great pics Everyone!

I would have loved to have joined you, but the SWR is having ignition probs at the moment.

Tell me, where did you find the old wooden mine structure? Out at the Carrizo Overlook?

Yep, out at the end at the Carrizo Overlook, then a short hike down a foot path.
