Old Dale Mining District

Post by Chazz Layne » Sat Sep 18, 2010 3:44 pm

Finally got a few minutes to sit down and go through pics from our trip last weekend: http://www.oausa.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2183

We took a loop route through one of many overlooked southern Mojave gems, the Old Dale Mining District. This area sweeps from the higher areas at the edge of the Mojave southwards, into the Sonoran desert and Joshua Tree NP, winding through various mine sites along the way. We started out with 4 vehicles - Larry in the Crazy FJ, Jon in the 4Runner, and Nick in another FJ. After a night of last minute installing, chocolate cake, and sheltered camp at my folk's place we headed into the desert.

After exploring the "center of town" we went up to the Duplex mine for lunch. The top of the mountain above Duplex is likely the best view for 50 miles, with panoramic views of Pinto Basin and the surrounding mountains. I was hungry, so having done the hike before I opted to eat my pastrami sandwich instead.

On our way down into the 'Basin we stopped along the trail to check out a potential suspension issue on the 4Runner. That's when Randy caught up with us in the Xterra.

After determining the ball joint was going nowhere we made our way down to the Mission mine where Nick and I promptly climbed the tower (I figured it was a bad idea on the scouting trip, since Dani and I were alone). The view was great, and it was at least 10* cooler on top with a nice breeze. Mission mine is more modern than usually encountered out here, and has an abundance of equipment and miscellaneous bits left behind. The tower is for the shaft elevator directly below. Were it not for the bee hive, the mine could probably still be entered since it is all metal (no crumbling wood ladders to worry about).

Next stop was the Goldenrod mine, which has a small collection of abandoned antique vehicles and a stable horizontal shaft about 100 yards deep, filled with assorted sparklies.

Off to camp along side Brooklyn Mine Jeep Trail at the Gold Rose Mine cabin...

The cabin is an ongoing restoration project and visitors are encouraged, not required, to add their own additions/repairs to the place. At some point, the massive patio and firepit were added making for a very comfortable dining area. Unfortunately... morning brings the bees.

The great thing about camping at Gold Rose Mine cabin is the shelter of the canyon walls. Dawn breaks early in the desert, but thanks to this the heat doesn't get bad until 9-10 am.

The bad thing about camping at Gold Rose Mine cabin is the bees get bad long before 9-10 am...

Image Image

Randy helped smoke out the bees and we quickly packed up and headed up to the Los Angeles mine.

Image Image Image

It was starting to get hot out, and the bees were following Larry's giant yellow 4x4 flower , so we made our way up OK Mine Road to the OK mine where, free from the bee swarms, everything was OK once more...

Under some crazy cloud formations we made our way back to Old Dale / Gold Crown Road for lunch.

...and after all that work on Friday night, my plan to use jumper cables as a temporary way to power my new on-board air totally failed thanks to a massive gap in the clamps on the jumper cables. Thanks to Larry for once again filling my tires to highway pressure. Of course, now that I'm home I have it fixed and it works great.

Thanks to everyone who made it out, hopefully the weekend was as much fun for you as it was for us. For the folks that missed this trip, we only covered about half of the area so I expect there will be another trip out there in the near future. Oh, and thanks again for sharing water after the bee incident. :D

Wow what a great looking trip, Chazz. Thanks for the report. I think you have some good POTM entries in there!

Chazz, thank you for leading us out for another incredible adventure in the Mojave Desert. I had a great time, both with the locations we visited, and the information you and Dani provided to keep it all in historical perspective.

First, I must give a big shout out and thank you to your mom and dad. They were very gracious to open their lovely home to a bunch of traveling strangers. The chocolate cake your mom crated as our welcoming "snack" was amazing !!! (And being able to shower before the trail was awesome, too  )

The Gold Rose Mine cabin was fun...or should I say "the bee's knees"

Without going into a step by step, all of the stops on our adventure were great - the remnants of these mining operations were fascinating to see; as was the disappointment to witness the destruction many less concerned folks have perpetrated on these pieces of history. Seems no matter how remote or significant, there is always someone willing to ruin it before the next visitor has a chance to arrive...

Still, even that is worth seeing - knowing we all need to do our part to help preserve this stuff for the next guy to see...

Can't wait to join Chazz, Dani, Nick, and Jon again to explore more of this wonderful area of the desert....
