Bishop & Yosemite

Post by ssc » Mon Sep 27, 2010 7:02 pm

The wife and I took a few days to search for some fall colors around Bishop. It is still too early with the warm weather. Hit a few trails and then decided to go to Yosemite-since I have never been there. The scenery is impressive and the folks climbing the rock faces are crazy. :o A few pics.

Good Lord! I can remember when it was a big deal if you could climb "The Nose" route in a day. Especially difficult with all the traffic overhead..I can't even imagine 3 hours. I'm assuming by "free-climbing" you mean "soloing"....Yes?

Totally. Didn't mean to leave you hanging.

You captured some great color, especially with the images of Lake Sabrina. Your exposures on El Capitan and the climbers are right on. The others are just a tad over. You may want to try taking in exposure reading off the sky and then adjusting from there. That's also your best exposure point when shooting surfing.

Another option, especially when shooting midday like you were, is to combine 2 exposures. I'm not talking about HDR, that's a different animal, but take one frame exposed for the sky and another exposed for the ground. Combine them in Photoshop and you'll have a much more accurate rendition of what you saw with your eye.

Another thing that helps quite a bit with landscape work is a circular polarizer. One thing to keep in mind while using one is that you need to be at a 90 degree angle to the sun. It's the same concept as in polarized glasses. You'll want one when you go down to watch the circus on Oahu. Just remember, at high noon, every direction is 90 degrees to the sun.

A couple of them appear to be a bit on the "soft" side but that could just be my eyes. I've been staring at code most of the day.

I took a peek at the EXIF data and you're using a great setup. Take that thing off full auto though. ;)

If we get a chance to get together in the near future, I'll give you a quick rundown on the settings.

Sean,
Thanks for the info. Should I bump the sharpness due to soft? On the auto-are you speaking of the couple of shots with the 40D iso auto? Both cameras are run AV. Or auto exposure? I look forward to getting together.

Thanks Steve

Those are 2 of my favorite places in CA. Awesome rock climbing in both places. The bishop bouldering is world famous, as well as the trad and big walls in Yos. Yosemite valley is a magical place.

Those are some nice pictures there, Steve. I love Bishop and the surrounding areas! Just wish I had more time to spend there.
