Okay, maybe I put the cart before the horse. But, I bought the Yaesu Vertex VX-170 handheld for $129.00 online (thought is was a good deal). But, now I need to study for the Operating License so I can use the VX-170. I checked my area for upcoming classes, but there is nothing going on right now in the Mission Viejo area. So, any advice on what is the best study book(s) to buy???? Or is there good study courses on-line???
Thanks...

Re: HAM Operating license
There are lots of ways to go here, but this is what I did:
1. I read the ARRL Technician Class Ham Radio License Manual. Pretty easy read, and there are questions at the end of each section so you can make sure you are absorbing the material.
2. I took a bunch of practice tests on http://www.qrz.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It's free, and they have a bunch of randomly generated tests that pull from the question pool. Just make sure you take enough tests to get a good cross section of the questions.
After I passed my Technician test I decided to study for my General. I wasn't in the mood to read another book, so I went to http://www.hamtestonline.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. You need to register and pay a fee for this, but they have a great adaptive learning tool. In study mode the site presents material on a subject, and then asks you questions before going on to the next topic. It keeps track of how you are doing with you answers and will circle back and review areas where you are having problems until you know the material. Their random test generator is a little more powerful than the one on qrz.com. I like the site and found it a pretty easy way to study. It may be cheaper to just buy a book though, especially if you are only thinking about getting the Tech license and don't plan to go further.

Actually, I think you will find that a lot of guys buy the radio first. Whether it's an incentive to get your ticket or just a chance to listen in, there is nothing wrong with getting it first.
From my own personal experience, I have found the Gordon West books to be outstanding. I used them for my tests and was very pleased with his teaching style and approach to learning. He gives a very good explanation of the question as well as the reason behind the correct answer. Just a heads up, Gordon West offers a Tech class FREE, (see his link on our Outfitters section). For you this may be particularly attractive as Gordon usually holds his classes in the Orange County area. Gordon's books can be purchased through any book store (you may have to order it) or you can drive to the Anaheim HRO store and pick one up. Both E-Ham and QRZ offer materials and tests and both are excellent.
On the testing subject, there are several locations where the test is offered on a regular basis. If you let me know when you are interested in taking the test, I will dig up locations where you can take the exam.
