"Everyone deserves to be outdoors"

Post by tibaal89 » Mon May 19, 2008 3:12 pm

What sentiment are we going for with this motto?

I guess I'm hung up on the word 'deserves.' Deserves - To be worthy of; merit (earn)...

If I'm correctly understanding the word 'outdoors' to mean not just outside (i.e. not in a building) in general, but 'outdoors' in the sense of the backcountry, parks, trails, etc... then in my view, not everyone deserves to be outdoors. There is a responsibility attached to enjoying the outdoors. In fact websites and communities like this champion the notion that there are special imperatives through TREAD LIGHTLY and the like.

When I think of graffiti, off-trail driving, garbage, etc and try to cast those individuals as worthy, meritorious... deserving... it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Not trying to cause a fuss, just thinking aloud here. Thanks for reading. :geek:

Maybe something more like "Experiencing the great outdoors" would be more appropriate...

I don't have the same reservations with the word "deserves", but I don't think the motto expresses the idea behind this site.

IMO, it's not about deserving the outdoors, its about experiencing the outdoors...

Hi Tibal, and welcome to the site. You have a good point. Not "everyone" deserves the right to be outdoors, some should be locked up. ;)

We feel that the motto is an important aspect of the website from the get-go. We will start a post to come up with a new motto for our website. :)
