2010-11-20: Goat Canyon Trestle Hike

Post by BorregoWrangler » Thu Nov 11, 2010 3:28 am

I'm ready to get out there and get my butt kicked again... its worth it! I'll be heading out late Friday night after work to camp somewhere around Doz Cabezas so I can get an early start up the mountain. For those interested in going I'd like to meet at the Mortero Palms trail head, which I believe is N32° 43.215 W116° 08.925, at 7:30am on Saturday November 20th. Any stock 4wd will be able to get to the trail head.

This is a tough hike. Anyone participating should be in good physical shape. 3 miles of boulder-hopping with an elevation gain/loss of 1200' each direction. If I remember correctly, this trip took me 7 hours last time.

A good place to camp is at a boulder outcropping someplace near N32°43.312 W116° 08.230

I'll probably be rolling into camp around 2am Saturday morning.

Date: Saturday Nov. 20th
Time: 7:30am
CB Channel: 32.
2 meter: 147.510
Suggested Gear:
-water & food
-hiking boots
-appropriate clothing
-hat
-sunblock
-gloves
-first aid kit
-flashlight
-camera
-backpack

The Carrizo Gorge at the southern edge of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a spectacular chasm and home to the Goat Canyon railroad trestle. Two hundred feet tall and 750 feet long, it's the tallest curved wooden trestle ever built in the world.

The construction of the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad began during World War I in the steep-walled Carrizo Gorge near the town of Jacumba. Many people were convinced at the time that it couldn't be done, but John D. Spreckels didn't rest until the "impossible track" was completed in November, 1919, at a cost of $18 million.

John are you comming down via the tracks or the Mortero Palms trail? I know there were a lot of people that were regretted not doing this hike last year. I am going to repost this on MyJeepRocks.com if you don't mind. I remember this was quite a hike last year. I regreted not bringing my trecking poles.

Wouldn't you much rather get a nice night's sleep in your own bed and meet in Alpine at 5:30?

Sounds good. I plan on taking the same route that we did back in april.

This time I'll remember to bring my hiking staff.

Actually, that does sound better. So does this mean you're going to make it?

Yep, put me on the list with the possibility of a co-worker as well.

Sounds good!

I'll just go into work a little earlier so I can get off sooner. 5:30 in Alpine on the 20th it is then. Meet at Carl's Jr?

That would be awesome, Ollie. Hope you can make it. If so, you're in for a real treat! Looks like we're also meeting up with another fellow from expedition portal at the gas station just south of Ocotillo.
