For those interested in seeing how far you can communicate via VHF / UHF Simplex -

This Sunday, August 5, 2012 from 9am - 2pm is Southern California Simplex Operating Day. All VHF / UHF analog and D-Star qualifies. This is a great event for disaster preparedness, as repeaters might be overwhelmed or disabled in case of a real emergency. You can operate from your house, mobile, or best of all, up on a hilltop to take advantage of elevation.

Participating stations should first check in with net control - there will be net control stations in Western Los Angeles and North County San Diego. After contact with net control is made, net control will ask to see if other stations can copy you. All stations acknowledged by net control will be able to QSO with you. Remember to monitor the frequency first to make sure it is clear before calling for net control.

D-Star VHF - 145.615
D-Star UHF - 446.500
Analog VHF - 144.450 (primary), 144.460 (secondary)
Analog UHF - 446.000
