Instead of heading out early for the dove opener this Saturday (I'll hunt the November opener when its nice and cool out), I'm planning on cruising on out in the afternoon to catch bait and fish one of the canals all night near El Centro in the Imperial Valley.
If anyone's interested in coming along, let me know. Its pretty warm out there. Expect to sweat and expect bugs. If you want the big ones you gotta earn it. If should drop down into the mid 80's at night. Drink lots of water. Think deep-sea fishing gear in terms of what is needed. Big Flathead Catfish hide in thick cover and you got to strong-arm them out before they snag you up.
I'll probably hit the road around 3PM.

Re: Imperial Valley Night Fishing: Saturday, Sept. 1st
Yesterday my brother-in-law and I headed on out to Imperial Valley to scout out some new areas along the Alamo and hopefully hook into some Flats. The conditions at night were much better than I had expected. There were little to no bugs to deal with (besides giant roaches and camel spiders) and we enjoyed a cool breeze. The moon wasn't quite full but once it came out from behind the clouds, it was bright out. DFG was out in force since it was the dove opener and at one of our stops they came up to check us out.
We finally settled on a spot, nearly getting my BIL's 2WD truck stuck in some soft dirt, and fished until about 4AM. After a couple hours of fishing I was debating on whether to try another spot or stick it out where we were. I guess we should have moved because we didn't get a bite all night. It was still good getting out there though, and I have some new spots to try out next time I get a chance to head out there.
