Looking For Firearms Training Recommendations
Looking For Firearms Training Recommendations
Anybody have a recommendation for a good place to get some firearms training? Nothing advanced, just looking for some basic handgun training. Orange or LA county preferred.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Thanks, they are one of the schools I found in my Internet search.ssc wrote:ftatv.com

I'm also looking at http://www.allsafedefense.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; One thing I like about the second option is apparently they offer the opportunity to shoot a variety of different guns, which would be helpful. Anyone happen to have any experience with them?

Re: Looking For Firearms Training Recommendations
I have never heard of them. The instructor has no law enforcement experience and I have had some interactions with "NRA Instructors" who didn't know very much. If you are interested in shooting different handguns, I am on the range most Sat's at Raahagues shooting IPSC-if I get there early or just shooting the bull if not. You are welcome to stop by to shoot IPSC or just try a bunch of different guns. If you give me a list of guns you want to shoot, I am sure we have them. Just bring ammo. By the way, I have, as have many of my fellow shooters, taught basic handgun safety and much more advanced classes. Some are even certified "NRA instructors."
This offer is for real, just let me know ahead of time so I can be sure I will be in town as will some of my fellow shooters. Have a thick skin as no one gets out without being the butt of a few jokes--though safety is always 100%. You will need protective glasses and hearing protection. By the way, if I understand your handle correctly, we also ride.

I hadn't thought about the previous law enforcement angle before. That's a good observation, especially given the training and experience that would represent.ssc wrote:I have never heard of them. And a very kind offer to come out and shoot with you some time. We may just take you up on that. I think we'll work on getting the basic training done first, but we'll be in touch after that.
My screen name is actually a reference to canyoneering. That photo in my avatar was taken up in the Middle Fork of Lytle Creek in the San Gabriels. As it happens though we did ride once upon a time. My wife and I are both ex-roadracers - we met each other at Willow Springs in the early '90s.

Thanks.
Would the Gunsite program that traveltoad did, be too much for what you need?

I saw that report and it looked like a great experience. Probably more than what I'm looking for at this point though.DaveK wrote:Dave:Cnynrat wrote:Anybody have a recommendation for a good place to get some firearms training? At this point we're just looking for some basic training suitable for beginners. I'd probably describe it as gun safety plus getting some experience.traveltoad wrote:Are you looking for a gun safety program or something more?

Check at a local gun shop or range and you should be able to find someone local.Cnynrat wrote:At this point we're just looking for some basic training suitable for beginners. I'd probably describe it as gun safety plus getting some experience.
I know there is http://www.shootsafelearning.com I have been told good things about them but I have not been to any of their classes nor do I know anyone first hand who has gone.
You might also try http://www.idpa.com and see what you can find there.
I don't know if you plan to purchase a gun (handgun?) maybe for personal defense or if you just want to try shooting as a sport. If it is the former I would recommend more than just a safety class. If your intent is personal safety you really need to take a "real" class. I can tell you from personal experience that I had a hand gun for defense for a couple years before taking a class. I spent time shooting with some very knowledgeable friends and I felt comfortable and confident with it. After taking the GunSite Pistol 250 class I realized that I didn't know diddly-squat
