Destination Dark Canyon, Utah

Post by DaveK » Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:21 pm

Our net this week will focus on the destination, Dark Canyon, Utah. Dark Canyon is probably not familiar to most, but that was one important reason for much of it's appeal. My use of the description, "Dark Canyon", as I am using it, involves a much larger area, including the Manti La Sal National Forest, the Grand Gulch Cedar Mesa Plateau, Natural Bridges National Monument, the Valley of the Gods, the Moki Dugway, Beef Basin and Comb Ridge. The net will touch on most of these areas.

The following photo is just an example of the areas we discovered on this trip. For purposes of getting the most out of the net, it will be necessary to follow the link below, which will take you to my trip report for our recent visit to Dark Canyon and the surrounding areas. There is one location in the general area of Dark Canyon that deserves to be mentioned individually - Natural Bridges National Monument. In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt established Natural Bridges National Monument, creating Utah's first National Park Service area. Camping is actually allowed in the Monument, but the spaces are very limited. For more information see: http://www.nps.gov/nabr/index.htm
