Jeep JK Tie Rod and Drag Link

Post by leifbennett » Mon Nov 29, 2021 9:42 am

I've worn out the stock tie rod and drag link ball joints on my Jeep JK, and am looking to replace the rod and link with something a bit more sturdy. Does anyone have experience with aluminum vs. steel, or with the Teraflex (steel), Steinjager (steel), Synergy (steel), Doetsch (aluminum), RPM Steering (aluminum), or Barnes 4WD (aluminum) 1-ton sets? I'm having trouble figuring out which one I want, and would appreciate any advice.

Since it's on stock axles, I expect to upgrade the wheels as well, to something with a 4.5" or 4.75" backspacing.

Leif

I checked with one of our OAUSA Jeep “guru’s to see if they could offer some advice, but it seems that your question was out of his area of expertise. Given the immense popularity of Jeeps, there has to be a forum where knowledgeable guys hang out.

Good luck!!!

My recommendation is the Yeti front steering linkage components. The parts are all sold individually, and they are not inexpensive - but they have an excellent track record holding up on the JK out on the trail. Synergy components are also excellent, and are available in a kit.

I also suggest investing in a high quality steering stabilizer shock set up, and a sturdy front track bar assembly. These components are all interlinked, and any play in one part of this "link" will affect the longevity and performance of the rest. Play in any of these components can lead to the dreaded "death-wobble", a notorious and potentially dangerous indicator of issues with the Jeep's steering system.
