OAUSA Net - December 9, 2021 - Redundancy, Redundancy, Redundancy

REDUNDANCY

Second Session

Time did not permit us to complete this topic, so we added a second session.

Original Posts

Redundancy is a recently coined term that we use to describe how we should prepare ourselves for activities where survival and safety are at issue. While we usually hear and use the term in connection with 4WD trips and emergency preparedness, it is equally applicable to every day activities, such as driving vehicles, protecting our computers, safeguarding our homes, and so many others.

The concept of redundancy also goes by other names, like having back-ups or extras, and "one is none", but in reality, it’s all the same. The idea of redundancy is, by no means, a new concept. One of the biggest proponents of preparedness was Baden Powell who, over a hundred years ago, devised the Boy Scout motto - BE PREPARED. To be honest, however, Powell intended his motto to be much more expansive than our concept of redundancy, but they are both founded in the concept of preparation.

Webster defines “redundancy” as profusion or abundance. For those who use their vehicles for travel into remote and primitive locations, redundancy means:
  • the ability to survive,
  • the foresight to realize that things break
  • the importance of having spares
  • the wisdom to plan ahead for the type of conditions which will be encountered.
The old saying that the best lessons are those learned the hard way, is not quite true, as it leaves out the last and most important part, and that is that the lessons should be by someone else. Otherwise, when its your turn to learn the hard way, the lessons are often expensive or dangerous, or both.

Thus, we offer redundancy as a means of helping everyone to be prepared, to plan ahead, to think about what you will encounter in the outback, and to do your best to avoid costly problems and dangerous situations. Since just about everyone has experience in this regard, let us know how you prepare.

I don't know whether it's redundancy or not, but I guess that it could be redundant power, as I did get one of these:

I don't know what the unit weighs, but it's not light, but not too heavy either.
They recommend to put a charge into it at least once every 30 days or so, if you haven't been using it, since you plug it in to charge it after using it.

KK6CTT for the online check-in for 12/09/21.

Acronym "P-A-C-E" example:

o Primary plan: Use Google Maps to provide an A to B route, we all do that.
o Alternate plan: Digging deeper, realizing there could be traffic issues an alternate route avoiding weekend traffic or if it is suppose to rain routes that travel through high ground or avoiding midday heat...
o Contingency plan: Renting a car? Taking a plane cutting down D = R x T? Shipping and picking up load on the far end...
o Emergency plan: AAA towing? Having others with you with cross-leveled recovery and towing gear or a "chase trailer." Survival gear for inclement weather or a longer stay than anticipated. Knowing how to use social media and groups like SCOR...SOCAL Off-Road Recovery; https://www.facebook.com/scor.offroad.recovery/

Communications/Radio: Mobile and HT. When hiking 2x HT some times 3-count. It is common for me to carry the following items when I am relying on ham radio for communications:
o Extra hand mic (mobile/base station).
o Speaker mic for HT
o Power source vehicle/extra battery/chargers/solar system
o Extra coax/coax connectors/antenna (roll-up J-pole is common to my gear)
o HT-battery eliminator
o HT-AA battery tray
o HT-two batteries

Lighting:
o Flood/headlamp/flashlight
o Batteries and USB charge capable (a recent conundrum USB mini vs "C" plug)
o Enough of the right alkaline batteries

Instruction manuals
o Hard and E-copy on my cell phone

Navigation (GPS, maps, compass)
o Car, handheld, wristwatch compass, lensatic compass
o Upload maps to GPSes, PDF to phone, hard copies...

Vehicles tire repair keys fuses

Camping gear
stoves
tents
water, storage, purification, location
sleeping bags, blankets
clothing
footwear

Tools
o Machete, pruning saw, military E-tool (file in the case with the shovel "nesting gear")
o Pruning shears
o Multi-tools (Leatherman, Gerber...get a nice one, you'll be glad you did!)

First aid kits
o Boo-boo kit
o Trauma kit
o Personal medical (specific to individual to include EpiPen or prescriptions)

Repair items

Batteries and chargers

Fire extinguishers, (types and sizes)

Vision aids (glasses, magnifying lens, binoculars)

Fire starting materials

Recovery straps

Gas can pouring spouts
