Portable Amateur Radio operating gives us an opportunity to really get to know the pleasure of making great contacts. Often when we try to operate from home, we are plagued by noise, interference, rules, and safety problems.

By setting up a portable operation you have the chance to experience the wonder of low noise floor operating. Short antenna feed line runs that maximize the signal you can put on the air. Experience specialized operating programs like ARRL Field Day, Parks on the Air, or Summits On The Air to name a few.

With a modest station it is possible you can make some amazing contacts.

By operating portable you can prepare to fulfill one of the tenets of Amateur Radio, emergency communications.

We will discuss the basics of operating, and give some examples of equipment you may like to try.

o Running an extended "ShakeOut Drill" with the Riverside County ARES group off of Keller from the Owl Canyon camping ground NE of Barstow on 10/23/21; a Catalina Repeater Net Controller, Chris, KF6LEX, provided information about the coastline area while Grant, KK6AHZ, provided the opportunity for three stations to pass National Traffic System Radiograms:

Approximately 60 miles to Keller Peak for the hour long SAT net after the 2021 Great ShakeOut drill that occurred on the previous THU.

Of course this is a "doctored" photo but it does provide a view of the remote camping setup where I thought a 2m Yagi would bridge over the ~60 mile distance to Keller Peak. The wind was a force to be reckoned with.

The setup of the station with solar support to a LiFePO4 battery setup through 25' RG8X out of a Yaesu FT-2900 at 5 watts...Good antenna = lower power and longer battery life. A little over one hour for the ShakeOut drill net and another 1.5 hours for the Red-Eye Net that same evening.

Someone was listening and I received a letter from the ARRL concerning the operation but I want to say it was representative of the group effort to include the great resource the Keller Peak Repeater provides to Southern California!
The Volunteer Monitor program does not only admonish, they praise as well!

o An example of setting up a crossband repeater site in order to establish and maintain communications between stations that lack line of sight o HF can be done many ways: o An oldie but a goodie:

RMEF Big Game Banquet - Come Win Outdoor Gear

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation - Southern California Chapter is holding its annual Big Game Banquet on May 21, 2022 at the Elks Club in Redlands. This is the not-to-miss Big Game Banquet of the year.

Rumor has it that the RMEF Committee has slated ~30 to 35 firearms as prizes for the evening. That's about 1 firearm for every 5 or 6 attendees!

The Big Game Banquet features a series of games that can yield chances to win great prizes. There is also the always popular BUGLE Craps game with players competing for a chance to win $10,000!

There is a live auction too, with many bidders working to get a chance to win the Mystery Safe that is filled with things that go bang: the winner gets not only the contents of the safe, but the safe too!

Dinner has a Country Hoedown theme, and will feature a whole roasted pig, butts, and country sides. Of course, there are appetizers and desserts too.

The venue for the Big Game Banquet is smaller this year, and the banquet is expected to sell out early.
