Dave,
I'm going to miss it since it's been a good camper for all of the off road places I've been to but it's going to be replaced with a Skinny Guy GLR 5.0 camper and a custom storage unit. I had always planned to build out the back of the Tacoma with a hot and cold water system, sink, forced air heater, electrical system, seating, storage, etc. Time to work on it always kept me from that project and now with my back problems I figured it would be easier to get something new that was already kitted out.
I went to the Overland Expo to shop for a new rig. I was thinking of an adventure van but decided they don't have enough true off road capability for what I like to do. I hadn't considered replacing the camper on my Tacoma but then I found out about the Skinny Guy Campers (SGC). I thought I'd try going with one of those and keeping with the known capabilities of my Tacoma rather than having to go to a whole new vehicle. The SGC campers are unique in that they are available with everything you'd have in a big RV except air conditioning in a very compact package that will still fit in a garage. I didn't go with the flush toilet. I'd like to use the toilet space for storage and I'm not getting their refrigerator since I already have one.
I decided to go with the GLR model which is made specifically for the Jeep Gladiator since I think it will fit my truck better and I can always replace the Tacoma with a Gladiator should I decide to get something newer in the future. The SGC engineers said that the camper will fit my truck. Unfortunately SGC doesn't make a native 6' model (the market is too small). Their idea is to use the 5' model with a 1' matching storage unit. That's good and bad. There is the added expense of the storage unit but it helps to make up for the limited storage in the camper itself.
I hope to have the new camper on the truck in time for Borregofest. Of course I'm still keeping the Pinzgauer.
