2026 Field Day & Summer Fest General Information and Sign-up

Post by DaveK » Sun Jan 25, 2026 11:10 am

WE'RE BACK

Announcement

Our annual Field Day and Summer Fest event IS BACK. It has always been one of our favorite outdoor get-aways and this year will be exceptional. For the last 17years, OAUSA has distinguished itself by the very unique approach that we take to this, and all of our events. This approach has evolved somewhat over the years, and while we have incorporated many activities into the weekends, we have never lost sight of Ham Radio, as an important part of the event.

For the last few years, we have used the Mt. Pinos campground in the Los Padres National Forest. This year, we have reserved most of this camp, but the number of campers that we can accommodate is limited.

Our uniqueness has taken the form of so many things that no other Field Day can claim, including:
  • an event in remote mountain campsites, with great summertime weather and scenery
  • an event where both 2WD and 4WD vehicles can attend, and where there are great 4WD off-road trails to explore
  • All levels of Ham Radio license testing, right at camp
  • world class cuisine at our cook-off on Saturday evening, and outstanding group meals for all the others
  • wine tasting
  • coffee tasting
  • Bourbon tasting and after dinner libations
  • a smorgasbord of appetizers before each dinner
  • multiple hiking trails
  • three days of relaxation
  • and, of course, a full Field Day competition
There is more, but these photographs should offer a glimpse of why we are so successful. Some past events:

SIGN-UPS

This year we return to the Mt. Pinos Campground in the Los Padres National Forest, located about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles. Our return to this event will include one change that is new, at least for us-this will be a 5 day event from Wednesday through Sunday. As always this is a family event involving camping in the mountains (elevation 7800 feet), an official ARRL Field Day competition, optional trail runs, great food and drink, and an opportunity to relax in the mountains of the Los Padres National Forest. The camp site is accessible by paved roads and all vehicles are welcome.

Some of our activities:
  • All levels of Amateur Radio license testing on Sunday.
  • Pot luck and cook-off dinner on Saturday evening combined with appetizers and wine tasting.
  • Numerous hiking trails
  • Hundreds of miles of off pavement roads, including some of the more challenging, (Miller Jeep Trail).
  • An active ARRL Field Day station open for business for the full 24 hours of Field Day

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you wish to attend during the day, to participate in the Field day event (not staying overnight), there is no charge. Everyone who wants to so participate is welcome!!!

GENERAL INFORMATION

PLEASE NOTE:
We have reserved several of the available campsites and we anticipate that there be sufficient space for all who want to attend, but the number of camp spots is very limited. We encourage campers to "tent camp" as this will ensure that we make as much space available as possible for all to attend. Please note that trailers and RVs are not recommended. Each campsite can accommodate a total of 6 people.

Given the limited number of sites available, it is very likely that each camp will need to hold more than one camper. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Mt Pinos Campground is very small, and each campsite, while accommodating up to 6 campers, has only enough room for 1 vehicle at each site. There is overflow parking however, which may carry a cost of $10.00 per day. This cost shall be shared equally by the number of vehicles whose occupants share a site. In years past, this fee was waived, but we never know how things may change.
