Constuction In Marron Valley

Post by dionysius » Thu Sep 04, 2008 10:26 am

Was up and about Otay yesterday and went out to Marron Valley to see what was up with construction there. A lot of stuff going on, they're fixing the old pack trail that goes west by the border.

Don't try going out there during the week as they have a lot of heavy traffic going in and out all day. Weekend is the best time. We didn't have much problems dodging the heavy equipment.

The Minnewawa access is being messed with, again. Someone placed a no trespassing sign on it. No locks on the gate though. A lot of environmental consultants going up and down that trail yesterday. Of course we were up and down it as well.

I think it will be a plus for the trail repair in Marron Valley. It would be nice if they take it all the way to the west. I don't know what's up with the BLM regarding the gate at Pio Pico. Both gates at the east and west ends are open for access to Otay.

I think the condition of the Minnewawa has something to do with access, but they've been grading the other two trails regularly and that's been with the BP's equipment, not BLM.

Here's the skinny, just as I thought from the BLM on the pack trail upgrade

So was this road impassable before they started fixing it up? Or are they just making it easier to access for their patrols?

A couple of sections of the trail collapsed, preventing access. The BP is looking for every advantage they can get. The trail was originally a pack mule trail that ran along the border.

On the west side there is a trail that heads due south to the border, sometimes the gate is closed, most the time it's open. It splits to an upper and lower trail. The lower trail was probably where the pack trail would join up from the east side. Currently it ends at a farm on the Mexico side. A lot of stray horses and cattle cross and graze on our side.

The picture was taken from the upper part of that trail which ends here
