Driving record: 2 tickets in 28 years, my last traffic ticket was 8 years ago.

So two months ago I following my 22 year old niece in her white Dodge Neon, we were driving north bound on HWY 58 from Barstow towards Hinckley (of Erin Brockavich fame). As I get off the freeway I get a red light from the CHP who proceeds to write me a speeding ticket for exceeding 65mph with a side note (90 plus). I told him I did not believe I was going 90mph and asked him if it was so, why then did he not pull over my niece who was ahead of me. He responded by say she was going slower? Funny thing was, she was in front of me and not going 1 MPH slower? The officer was traveling in the opposite direction and shot us with radar??

The penalty for a speeding ticket when exceeding 90mph = no traffic school, a fine of $391.00 and 2 points on your record.

I like judges and think there is still justice to be found here in America. So I woke up at 4:45am this morning and drove to Barstow to see a judge.

Conversation in court

Judge: Richard Pickard
Scott: Yes you honor
Judge: You are charged with speeding above 65mph, how do you plead.
Scott: Guilty your honor
Judge: I don't believe you were going over 90mph, would you like traffic school?
Scott: Yes your honor.
Judge: That will be $198.00, when can you pay?
Scott: Today your honor, thank you.
Judge: Have good day Mr. Pickard
Scott: You too your honor, thank you.

I was home by 11:30 a.m.

Sometimes it pays to see the judge.

Officer: I pulled you over for going dangerously slow - the speed limit is 65, and you were doing 28...

Thats awesome Scott. I havent had any tickets for 7 years. My last offense was "speed contest", which is street racing. I did 40 hours of community service at the most low down dirty ghetto food bank in Long Beach, probation for a year, and a fine. Im lucky my father is an attorney, because he guided my through the whole process and instructed me how to act towards a judge. Ive had several tickets for speeding before that. Every time i appeared in front of a judge, even if i had a warrant out for missing my original traffic court date, my fines were reduced by at least more than 70%, and ive taken traffic school 2 times.

No tickets for 7 years. I dont speed anymore. I drive perfect imo. Ive only been pulled over for loud exhaust in my Z, and tinted windows on the Expedition. Ive never been cited.

The head on collision i had when i was 20 with a lady who turned left in front of me while i was going 60 on Imperial Hwy in Yorba Linda, had a huge impact on my driving style today. I was thrilled when she was ruled at fault.

I was a dumb ass first driver.

Actually, I've had more run-ins with Fish&Game than Police. On some things, its really up to the discretion of the officer. Once, while fishing the canals in Imperial Valley, I was woken up from the bed of my truck in the early morning by Fish&Game to check my license. My rods were still out, 30 feet away. No problem. However, on another occasion while fishing along the Colorado River I had a guy come up on me while I was napping in my tent. The rods were out just a few feet away but I was cited a ticket for "unattended fishing poles." But hey... what... huh? Went to see the judge and had the fine reduced from $200 to $50. Now I got a pretty good bead on how to avoid them.

I always go see the judge, it pays off as usually the cop does not show up and you get to challenge his words without him there. In other words you walk.

You bet. When my buddy got the same ticket he just wrote a letter to the judge, asking for "judicial kindness" or something. He still had to pay the full amount, just on a monthly basis.
