Favorite So CA Dives

Well, OK, I'll be the first to post on the scuba section.

Both my sons and I are divers. My oldest is probably the most skilled, but my youngest likes it the most. He's my built-in buddy.

I'm cheap, and get horribly seasick on a boat, so I prefer beach dives. The nicest place I have found on the coast is Moss Street in Laguna. Even though the beach dives tend to be a bit murky, Moss Street is usually unbelievably clear.

We have also been exploring the diving off Cleo Street. Supposedly, there is a wreck about 200' off the beach. We searched for it, but could not find it. Try, try again!

Are you counting the Channel Islands because when there is a pause in the swell during winter the Channel Islands are world class. 100 ft vis and better, just amazing. Close by, I like Goat Harbor on Catalina, there is resident 150-200 lbs. black sea bass I have seen a few times. Scared the hell out of me, the first time I saw it. Italian Gardens, Eagle Reef and and Ship Rock.

Coastal spots that I frequent are Scotchmans and the Coves in CDM and Treasure Island (by the Montage) and Shaws in Laguna.

You should consider trying Bonine or the relief band and get over to the Isthmus. The diving there is amazing and the crowds are thinning out this time of year.

The beach below the old Marineland in Rancho Palos Verdes was a great spot, until the new homes went up. I havent been back to see what its like now, but i imagine urban sprawl will have its way with the beach.

I had my boat in San Pedro for a year and we would occasionally anchor along Palo Verdes. Even with the new homes and Mr. Trumps golf course the beaches and diving still seem quite pristine compared to here in Newport Beach. It's nothing like the old days when there were abundant game fish, abalone and huge lobster but it still feels a million miles from civilization.

Thanks for the tip. But Bonine makes me even sicker! I've tried bands, scope, and ginger. Nothing seems to work. However...I have found that a steady cocktail of dramamine - the night before, the morning of, and just before a dive, keeps me from getting sick. And Dramamine doesn't make me drowsy as it does many people!

I've done a couple dives at the Isthmus, and I agree, it's a beautiful place. I did my son's first dive after he was certified with him there.

That's awesome, good to hear you made it over. Did you dive off your own boat or the Garabaldi? My buddy Dave runs the Garabaldi, he was the harbor master in Cat Harbor for 20 years before taking over the dive boat. You would never know he is blind in one eye. My son was certified by Hillary the dive shop manager who also happens to be a brilliant marine biologist and the most mellow dive instructor ever. If you ever get a chance to dive with her, do it. She has encyclopedic knowledge of the ocean and is always willing to share. I learned a ton from her.
