Cleghorn 10 5 08

Post by Ki6ker » Sun Oct 05, 2008 2:12 pm

met BlueFJ around 9ish and set on off up the trail
As long as I have known craig, he has never made it over the Cleghorn so we spent around 3 or 4 hours going up all the side trails and taking in the views
oh, one thing, Pucker Hill is closed, for good, to many overturns, it is fenced off.
We met some nice guys from a XJ club. They were amazed at what Craigs FJ could do.
He was doing proud for the FJ Cruiser this day, even without the ahack, he just locked the rear and walked up and over everything thrown at him. I took 2 trails He did not, One was the Squeeze which would have added pinstriping to his DD so he went around, and one was to investigate a huge bolder in the middle of a climb left there by the ground movement. The Squeeze is wider now, but still as of camber as always. It managed to fold my mirrors in. And that bolder is in a bad place, I tried to push it off trail but it was to big so I put a ehrrl on it trying to clip it into mooving, st that point it looked like if it moved I wopuld be off camber an with little traction so I backed off, tryed bumping it with the rear bumper and just gave up, we now have a new obsticle to go around on a climb.
Anyway, a funny note.
on the way home I kept hearing a loud tapping, we looked at my disconect system and thought that was it, we , during 3 stops, dismantled the system and still, taptaptaptaptap. I got out to open the hood and saw my antennae for the amfm had been snagged by a bracket for my light bar and the wind was whipping it back and forth. I felt like an idiot, my discos are sitting on the floor of my Jeep and the fix was a 3 second pull on the antennae.
Oh well, at least I brought it home alive, I was about to call AAA. I would have felt like a jerk if I had and found it once towed home.

I Like Cleghorn thats my favorite place to go. I drive an FJ and I go thru the squeeze your buddy would have made it. I have never touched anything in there but its really close. I`m not sure where the big boulder is. Did it fall there from somewhere? They closed pucker hill awhile back a pick up went end over end and the forest rangers had to get him out so they fenced it off. Doesn`t matter that was practically a suicide run anyway no one ever did it only the people on motore cycles tried it and they couldn`t even get to the top.

That was definitely a fun morning. This trail has got some great views and real fun ascents/descents.
Thanks for the tour, Jim. The weather was perfect for wheeling. I wanna head back up there some time when we get some snow up there.

I guess I just know nothing about Cleghorn because if no one ever tried Pucker Hill then I have never watched them make it. I have seen more jeeps and hummers take that hill than I care to remember. the H1s eat it like cake. and TJs use it for a testing groound
Dangerous as it was, and yes it ate vehicles like hotcakes, personally I know of 3 that rolled last year. I guess having been out of the loop by doctors orders this year I did not realise that no one took it anymore but motorcyclist, Wasn't it just last year we did a run up there that 4 jeeps did it? must not because no jeeps try it, not motorcyclist.

Thats funny. I was sitting here at 8am, bored, and thought about taking my lame 31" tire Pathfinder to Cleghorn this morning. Another day wasted.

Dave we saw a Pathfinder doing really well on the trail yesterday
was playing around in a group of around 5 cherokees and proving to them that Nissan can make a very capable 4x4. was a very pretty yellow color and had some nice rockrails on it. Tires looked stock size, but more aggressive tread. Nice ride.

I have never been up Pucker Hill with my FJ but I have definitely went down it. I had my dog hanging from his harness between my front seats giving me a like like this... ...when I did. Probably why he threw up. I believe an FJ would make it up with A-Trac. The longer wheel-base helps. It's a shame it's closed down.
