Mountain Biking

OK, guys, you know I had to start this eventually. I figured this was the best place.

Anyway, my first choice for mountain biking is good old Skyline Drive in Corona. I can ride there from my house, one of my geocaches is up there, and it's a great ride down.

I've also taken the Scouts riding in the desert, around Hole-In-The-Wall campground near Essex. We had the HAM radios for some great emergency communication practice.

The Fullerton Loop is a nice urban trail. Tree-root clogged uphills, a couple of killer downhills, to a quiet lake for lunch, it's all there.

I am currently exploring the Chino Hills area. Some of those hills are so extreme I have to WALK my bike uphill! Not too good for the ego, but you can make it up on the downhills.

My ride (or part of it!) is pictured in my avatar, a Cannondale F700 hardtail.

So how 'bout you guys? Any MTB adventures to speak of?

My favorite ride was always Santiago Oaks Park in Orange, to the back of Irvine Park. From those trails, you can hit the back of Anaheim hills on Serrano. You can spend hours up there.

Back in the day, I raced road bikes (Cat.2 / Pro)for sort of a living. I lived in Placentia and trained on the road all over So. Cal doing the Lake Perris loop, or Mt. Baldy. 500-700 mile weeks were the norm. On the dirt I was a regular in Chino Hills, it's a great place with lots of average fire roads and awesome technical single track. I've run into mountain lion, bobcats and a large pack of coyot's. out there. In the winter the views are spectacular. My all time favorite ride in So. Cal is the Mt. Wilson trail. Epic single track, maximum exposure to some 50 ft. sheer drops and just awesome footing. Check it out someday.

Last time I went to CH, I was riding down the trail and a large coyote was loping up. He didn't even attempt to get out of my way; I guess he was used to MTB's. I've seen mountain lions nearby, at Firestone Ranch, but never in CH.

My wife prefers I don't ride my MTB off-road alone any more, since that poor guy in Irvine got attacked and killed by a mountain lion.
