Search engine on this site needs a little help.

Post by gon2srf » Thu Nov 06, 2008 5:51 pm

Ken-

Any idea why the search engine on this website works so poorly?

Here is an example: Search words: Mojave Trail

Results: The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: mojave trail.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

Here is another example: Search words, Trail

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: trail.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

If I put in the word gun it gives 84 results!

Sounds like a bug to me. I'll look into it.

I only ever search for the word "pork" and since nobody has made a post with that word yet I never find it!

(Edit: found it! )

I have made some adjustments to the search, but the index is still being updated.

However, I did find that you can modify your search parameters to get around the error. Put an asterisk after the search term like this: "trail*". This will find everything that has a word that starts with trail.

I modified the search settings and rebuilt the search index. It should work a little better now. However, it is not Google.
