After-Market Brake Pads for Toyota

Post by BruisedFJ » Fri Dec 05, 2008 2:15 pm

I am gathering information about after market brake pads for the Toyota FJ. Has anyone tried anything other than OEM pads? If so, please reply with the brand and how they performed, how long they lasted in comparison to stock, and if you had any problems.

In my last Toyota (a Tacoma Extra Cab), I burned through the brake pads in less than 20,000 miles, and Toyota wants to machine the rotors every time. The stock pads on my FJ at least got me to 25,000 miles, but I hope to find better options.

Secondarily, do you let them machine your rotors with every brake job?

I used brembo rotors and raybestos pads on my 03 tundra. Never had any issues. Not sure how long they lasted because I only had the truck about 15k miles.

I use only toyota brake parts on my cruiser.

The DBA rotors seem to get very high reviews. Not sure where you can get them in the states though..

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the FJ brake wear. The FJ brakes seem pretty darn good for an SUV, are you unhappy with the performance of the OEM brakes or are you just concerned with wear? If you switch to a ceramic pad your going to eat through the rotors faster. Anyway let us know if you choose to switch them out and what you went with.

Ahhh brake pads, my specialty :) EBC Green Stuff in my opinion are the best LOW DUST pad you can use for the street. Several street driven race cars i help with on the weekends use EBC Green Stuff. Some of the track only cars use other race compound EBC pads. AXXIS Metal Master pads are good too, but i would go with EBC Green Stuff for your daily driven FJ. I have AXXIS on my trucks, but ill be buying EBC when they wear down just because they produce less dust.

You can get them on Summit.

I've used EBC pads since the FJ first came out, and I still have the original test set of EBC sport rotors on my FJ (about 50,000 miles - a miracle for a Toyota truck).

The EBC Green Stuff pads also stop quicker than the OEM pads, in addition to virtually no dust. And their performance is improved when used in conjunction with the EBC sport rotors. These rotors are slotted to remove debris, and dimpled (not through-drilled, which leads to cracking on SUVs / off-road vehicles) to void the gases that build up between the pad and rotor and decrease braking performance in stock systems.

And if it isn't already obvious, Dirty Parts is an EBC dealer...

I don't think any question I've asked that started with "Do you carry . . ." or "Can you get . . ." has ever been answered with a no. You're the man with all the connections! Guess I'll be dropping in soon.
