It doesn't always go as planned.

Ok... I really don't have many photos. It was to be a quick trip down to Baja and back... but you know what they say about the best laid plans...

We left the OC about 7am Thursday, slabbed down to the boarder and into Mexico without incident.

A short break on the way to Ojos Negros
Image

Setting up camp on the way to Santo Tomas. Mark's bike problems (BMW 650X) started with a high idle just before we reached camp. It was a sign of things to come.

With morning upon us, we were optimistic that bike problems were yesterdays news.

Hmmm... Javier and I waiting.... and waiting... and waiting...
Image

Something must be wrong, the wait was getting too long. Sure enough, Mark had a head on with a truck and (unrelated) his high idle problem was back. The head on left him no worse for wear, he had pretty much stopped before impact so it was really not much more than a tip over... the high idle however...

A closer inspection in Santo Tomas found:
Image

This is after the header had been moved off of the coolant line. It seems that at the recent 12k dealer service, the header pipe was not aligned correctly and it was resting on the coolant line. There was very little dried coolant showing which was a good sign. We had found the problem early. A little re-alighning and we would be on he road again.

Just to be safe, we (Javier) decided to put a patch on the coolant line.

So... after the repair in Santo Tomas, We noticed that the coolant in the reservoir bottle was pretty low. We topped it off but could not get the radiator cap off to double check the level there. Anyway, there was still a little coolant in the reservoir, and very little evidence of dried coolant on the engine case, so we can look for a wrench in Erendira when we stop for breakfast (now more of a lunch).

Sorry, no photos of the tacos in Erendira.

After lunch we borrowed a wrench from the mechanic located next door to the taco stand and peered into the rediator. Hmmm... lets add some water...

As soon as we did that, it was obvious that the repair was not holding, time for drastic measures.

As the repairs began, so did the conversation about the lack of coolant, the recent 12k service and what seemed to be a dealer mistake. Hey, it was either that or start drinking (more on that later).

While the repairs continued... the fire burned:
Image

So after the coolant line was repaired and the radiator filled we realized that the 650 motor was terminal. Not good. So the ever-resourseful Javier went off in search of a ride north.

When he returned he had scored. A ride. A place to stay. And as we would find out, a new friend.

So we found a truck to tow the dead 650 to Mike's house. Waiting for the tow truck...
Image

Once settled in our new digs... it was time for a little fun at Coyote Cals.
Image

Image

And a little take out dinner from I think it was called Cosina Familia...
Image

The next day we woke up early... watched the fishing boats get launched...
Image

And thanked our hosts:

Ok so... what to do on Sat? Long ride? Short ride? Our plans had already been modified... so what to do. Our host offered his house again for the night which started us all thinking about a short lazy ride to lunch and back to the house for some 12oz arm curls.

So... what to do... what to do...

Ok... short ride it is...

So, after a few arm curls, Javier decided that he needed a new sport. One he had never tried before...

No, no, Javier. Like this!

Well... maybe not...

Then off to a really yummy dinner. Three generations work/own this place...

Great pics, great story. Looks like they got plenty of rain down south, nice and green in Erindera.

Moral of story: Air cooled motors.

Great trip report and photos. With all those pictures, when did you have time to drive?
