Re: So I was pulled over last night...
Encounters like this make steam come out of my ears, and I've had quite a few ugly encounters like this over the years. I've learned a few lessons. 1. Their job is to be rightfully suspicious of everybody. EVERYBODY. However, if you are active or ex military, or active or ex law enforcement, or fire ...

Re: American Shooting Center
Dennis, I'm going to go next Friday evening for the class then go back and rent a few to try and find what fits me the best. Good thinking! Thanks for wanting to train properly. I grew up with firearms, thoroughly trained by my military father. I often lament these days about un-trained firearm ...

Re: New (and first) Radio!
A lot of people who aren't HAMS by 2M radios and have them modified so they can transmit on the 152 MHz race frequencies in their race trucks and prerunners I knew of a certain company that would buy Icom 2m HT's and modify them for their simplex 150mhz employee field HTs. The mechanic, also a ham ...

Re: New (and first) Radio!
While the W6NUT repeater is a bit over the edge, from an etiquette and regulations point of view, it has a long and storied history.... Yeah, I hear you. It's a mixed bag. Half the time their conversations are what I wish most QSO's are on the HF bands were-- lively, fun, witty with a great sense ...

Re: New (and first) Radio!
I know what you mean about the faceplate... been there. I like the 8800, and have one also. Get a nice dual band hand held and you've got a very powerful combo, thanks to the 8800's repeater function that will re-broadcast the hand-held's signal far and wide. Read up on that. Nice feature to have ...

Re: Getting the family involved?
I'd venture a "big picture" philosophical answer by suggesting that if the road trip is a deterrent, then the reward is not sufficiently there at the end of it. I don't think it's anything you are or are not doing. its just how they see it all. I don't think making camping comfortable is the key ...

Re: Benefits of 70cm?
My trail buddies and I prefer a 440 simplex freq on the trail to 2m mainly because 2m frequently has too much traffic on it, believe it or not. Especially when we get up high in the mountains and the range extends. Many times we've found haven on 440 when 2m simplex gets busy.

Re: A fun way to check your signal and hear yourself as DX!
Man, that's pretty interesting. Gonna have to dust off the HF rig and try that at some point! I still have audio recordings I made of QSOs with my brother several years ago when he was crossing the pacific in a 40 foot sailboat. Recently I turned some into MP3s and sent to him. He was amused to hear ...

Re: September 23,2010 - California fiream laws
The laws can be messy. I usually buy this book every other year or so "How to own a gun and stay out of jail"-- a California book written by a CA lawyer, updated often. I find it very helpful. It gives good examples of real casebook studies, court cases, etc. I've had a few experiences along the way ...

Re: What to do when your car reaches 100,000 miles.
Got 82k on my '99 Taco. It's not a daily driver, but once was about 6 years ago. Had to replace idler in the fuel inj. system around 65k, and an O2 sensor. Prior to that I had an '84 2wd Toyota longbed 22R 4cyl. I put 245,000 miles on it. One clutch change, a water pump and a warped exhaust manifold ...
